A prison officer suspected of smuggling drugs into Dublin’s Mountjoy Prison was arrested early last week. Jarlath Walsh (39) from north Dublin, who worked at the prison, was charged with four Misuse of Drugs Act offences. When searched at the jail’s gates at about 7:30 am he was found to have prescription drugs, cannabis, cocaine and heroin in his possession. He faces two counts of unlawful possession of cocaine and cannabis and two charges of possessing cocaine and cannabis for sale or supply to another. The Irish Prison Service says that he was discovered as a result of routine procedure and that all staff are subject to search when entering any of the country’s prisons. The service would not offer comment on the specifics of the case but in a statement the Prison Officers Association did say that “the actions of a few can bring disgrace and embarrassment to all of the hard-working prison officers around the country, who would have no tolerance of or take part in any form of illegal activity.” Read More. |
