A Battle Creek man, convicted of murder in the 1983 strangulation of a teenage girl, will be freed after Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm on Tuesday commuted his life sentence. Thomas Cress, 54, who maintained his innocence since 1985, will be released within a month from his cell at the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Ionia. "My thought is it is about time," said Cress' daughter, Thelma Dickerson, 31. "I am super excited. I cried. I gave it all to God. Seriously. I prayed every night.
