A 23-year-old inmate at McCormick Correctional Institution was sentenced Tuesday to 46 months in prison on a federal charge that he mailed threatening letters to Spartanburg County Solicitor Trey Gowdy, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives last month. Evidence presented in court showed that Jermaine Nelson of Pelzer, who according to the state Department of Corrections records is serving a 15-year sentence on a second-degree burglary charge, wrote and mailed a letter to Gowdy on Oct. 23, 2009, that contained “numerous overt threats.” Among the statements in the letter, according to U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles, were, “…your life is very limited ...
