Prison Sentence Extended For Russian Businessman

MOSCOW — Mikhail B. Khodorkovsky, the Russian tycoon who was imprisoned after defying Vladimir V. Putin, was sentenced to another six years behind bars on Thursday. It was a stiff term that was considered an unambiguous signal that Mr. Putin was not loosening control over the country in advance of presidential elections that he might enter.

The sentence was also seen as a blow to the credibility of Mr. Putin’s protégé, President Dmitri A. Medvedev, a former law professor who has often spoken out about the importance of improving the independence of the judicial system.

Mr. Putin, the prime minister and former president, has repeatedly declared that Mr. Khodorkovsky, 47, is nothing more than a violent criminal who deserves to be behind bars for many years. Mr. Khodorkovsky’s supporters maintain that he is being punished for standing up to Mr. Putin, saying that the Kremlin is using its authority to blatantly manipulate the courts.
