| SC Jail Struggles To Correct Issues |

The latest state inspection of the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center turned up several violations noted in the past. And some just can't be helped, jail officials say. Other detention facilities around the state are often cited for similar problems, Orangeburg-Calhoun Law Enforcement Commission Chairman Robert Hooper said. "Most of these are things that can't be corrected," Hooper said. "Some of these same issues have been going on forever. "For example, we scrub the soap scum off the shower walls every week. But when the state inspector shows up, if it's on a day we haven't scrubbed them, it goes down as a violation. "Plumbing is always one of our biggest problems. Inmates will flush shirts and other large items down the toilets. These things happen on a daily basis, not just once a year." Read More. |
