Arnold Schwarzenegger, who stepped down as state governor yesterday, may be missed by some Californians. But in the southern city of San Diego he has provoked outrage by commuting a young killer's prison sentence for no other reason, it seems, than that he is the son of a long-time political ally. On Sunday evening, Schwarzenegger continued the questionable tradition of outgoing American presidents and governors using their final hours in office to commute prison sentences and appoint croneys to lucrative positions. And among the prisoners to get a break from the 'Governator' was 21-year-old Esteban Nunez, son of the former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, who saw his jail term reduced from 16 to seven years. Nunez Sr formed a close relationship with the former bodybuilder and actor during his time as governor, a friendship that endured even after Nunez Jr was jailed for his part in the brutal killing of college student Luis Santos in 2008.
