Cutting-edge technology has blocked more than 600,000 unauthorized texts and cellular calls originating from inside the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman since August. Along with slowing down potential abuses, the system also has boosted state revenue by increasing pay phone usage 25 percent, or about $20,000, at the prison, Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps said. Money from pay telephones goes into the Inmate Welfare Fund, which provides goods and services to inmates at institutions around the state.
