PELLSTON -- The tall fences and paint-peeled walls of former Camp Pellston state minimum security prison will soon be history. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment plans to demolish the more than 50-year-old facility as early as next week, after several donations totaling about $20,000 were recently gifted to the state for the buildings to be razed and returned to state land. "I believe in the next week or two, we will start the actual demolition (of Camp Pellston)," said Kerry Wieber, DNRE forest land administrator. Built in 1957 by the Michigan Department of Corrections on state land, the 52 acre, 140 inmate corrections facility served primarily as a lumber and work camp for wards of the state, including a large logging program that supplied lumber to other correctional facilities around the state.
