SD To Close Juvenile Facility

South Dakota officials have received verbal notice that a youth treatment facility at the center of public safety concerns in Springfield is closing.

Officials with the state departments of Social Services and Corrections said Tuesday that they have learned the Springfield Academy will cease operations, perhaps as early as mid-February.

The privately run facility, operated by Youth Services International of Sarasota, Fla., offers behavioral health treatment and education services to boys and girls ages 12 to 18 who are placed there by social services, corrections, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and out-of-state entities.

Though once licensed to serve as many as 72 youths, its numbers had dwindled to 33 by December. And though present in the community for decades, its ability to safeguard its staff and the community had come under question in recent months and years after a number of incidents in which youths at the academy reportedly assaulted staff, stole or damaged vehicles and broke into a resident's vacant home.
