Guilty Plea Expected From Elderly Robber

Published: Jan 5, 2011 - Page: 3B Comments (0) RICHMOND, Va. — The so-called “Granddad Bandit” suspected of robbing 25 banks in 13 states between Dec. 19, 2008, and July 3, 2010, has signed papers to plead guilty to three holdups in Alabama and Arkansas.

Michael Francis Mara, of Baton Rouge, is being held in Virginia facing two bank robbery charges. His trial is scheduled Jan. 13.

Mara signed court papers in December asking permission to move charges related to one robbery in Arkansas and two in Alabama to Virginia so he can plead guilty and be sentenced here.

The FBI dubbed the balding and graying Mara the “Granddad Bandit” to help law enforcement and the public easily identify the suspect, whose picture was posted on billboards across the country.
