| AL Inmate Fights To Stay Execution |

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A convicted murderer has asked the Alabama Supreme Court and a federal judge in Birmingham to stop his execution scheduled for Jan. 13 at Holman Prison in Atmore for the slaying of his estranged wife during a violent domestic dispute. Attorneys for Leroy White, 52, have asked U.S. District Judge Karon Bowdre and the state's high court to stop the execution because his previous attorneys caused him to miss a deadline to file an appeal. "These attorneys failed to notify Mr. White or the District Court of their intention to discontinue their representation, and failed to file a notice of appeal," White's attorneys said in a motion to the federal court in Birmingham. Assistant Attorney General Clay Crenshaw said Bowdre and the state Supreme Court should deny the motions for a stay, partly because White has not shown that his appeal would ultimately be successful.
