Sheriff Bellotti's 'Are You Ok?' Program Helps 90-Year-Old Woman Get Urgent Medical Care

DEDHAM, MA, Jan. 3, 2010 – A 90-year-old Brookline woman was being evaluated this morning in Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital after Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti’s “Are You OK?” program summoned emergency help for her. The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital after she said she was in severe pain when she received her daily well-being check phone call from an “Are You OK?” officer.

“Once again, the ‘Are You OK?’ program came through and helped a person get medical attention when they need it most,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “I only wish more people would sign up for this free program because it is extremely effective and provides such a strong feeling of reassurance to seniors and their families.” The Brookline case marked the 74th time that “Are You OK?” has summoned emergency help for Norfolk County residents since Sheriff Bellotti introduced the program in 2001. Fallon Ambulance Service joined forces with Sheriff Bellotti in 2009 to keep the program alive when it was threatened by budget cuts.

Each morning, 365 days a year, “Are You OK?” officers place phone calls to nearly 300 elderly people throughout Norfolk County to check on their well-being. If program participants fail to answer their call or if they indicate they may need medical care, the officer takes steps to make sure emergency responders look in on the person and evaluate them.

“The program provides a safety lifeline to people while allowing them to maintain their independence in their own homes,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “It also provides tremendous peace-of-mind to loved ones who know that a trained officer from a public safety agency is checking in with their elderly relative each and every day.

“I want to give special thanks to the great people at Fallon Ambulance Service who allow us to operate ‘Are You OK’ out of their emergency response headquarters,” he said. Anyone wishing to learn more about “Are You OK?” or sign up for the program should visit the community programs section of Sheriff Bellotti’s website at www.norfolksheriff.com or call the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office at 1-866-900-7865 (RUOK).
