Inaugural graduating class from the Offender Mentor Certification Program will help fellow inmates recover and turn their lives around. WHAT: The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will recognize the accomplishments of the first class of females completing rigorous study to become certified alcohol and drug counselors at a graduation ceremony at Valley State Prison for Women (VSPW). Once certified, graduates of the Offender Mentor Certification Program (OMCP) will be placed in substance abuse treatment programs in one of California’s institutions for women to help other inmates recover and begin a new life. WHO: The keynote speaker will be Matthew Cate, Secretary, CDCR. Other speakers include VSPW Warden Walter Miller; staff from Walden House, which administers the OMCP program; and inmate graduates. VSPW staff, family members and community leaders will attend to honor the graduates. WHERE: Valley State Prison for Women, 21633 Avenue 24, Chowchilla, CA 93610. WHEN: Jan. 7, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. BACKGROUND: OMCP strengthens substance abuse treatment in California prisons. Certification as drug and alcohol counselors will also assist the graduates to obtain employment upon release. California is the first state in the nation to train inmates as certified alcohol and drug counselors to provide services for other inmates.
