Public safety concerns played a role in a Florida company's decision to close a youth treatment center at Springfield but was not the major factor, a company official says. Youth Services International of Sarasota, Fla., notified the state Monday that it plans to close the Springfield Academy the first week of February. That will result in the transfer of at least two dozen youths still at the center, the loss of jobs for 40 full-time employees and a major blow to the economy of this Bon Homme County town on the shores of the Missouri River. Jesse Williams, senior vice president for YSI, said Wednesday that recent community concerns about youths at the center who have assaulted staff or committed crimes after walking away from the facility are only one part of the company's decision to close the doors.
