PALMER -- An inmate in a Palmer jail made it through one fence and over another and then got a bit more than 15 miles away in the six hours he was on the run before police caught him Wednesday afternoon. Kent Charles Matte, 44, broke out of jail at about 8:05 a.m. He escaped from an outdoor, enclosed recreation area at Mat-Su Pretrial Facility in Palmer by unweaving a chain-link fence and tossing his coat over razor wire on another exterior fence and climbing over, according to the Department of Corrections. It's the first escape in the history of the facility, said Sam Edwards, state deputy commissioner of corrections. "I can tell you, as far as pre-trial facilities go, it's extremely rare to have an escape," Edwards said. Read More. |
