A corrections officer at the new Multi-County Juvenile Detention Center is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into an allegation by one of the center's former prisoners that he was forced into a sexual act.
Russell Watson, a corrections officer at the Detention Center, 2980 W. Fair Ave., has been placed on leave while Lancaster, Ohio police officers investigate the allegation made by a 17-year-old boy.
Lancaster police Detective Brian Lowe said the police department began the investigation after a Fairfield County Children Services representative filed a report last Wednesday.
"We've just started looking into it," Lowe said. "We want to make sure all the juveniles are safe out there, and if the person making the allegation is not telling the truth, we want to move quickly and restore the officer to his job."
The Multi-County Juvenile Detention Center is a state-of-the-art facility representing a collaborative effort between Fairfield, Licking, Perry and Hocking counties. It can house up to 50 juveniles and was opened on Feb. 9.
"The average population is 35, and two weeks ago we had a full house with 50 juveniles being housed here," said Ed Penrod, superintendent of the Multi-County Juvenile Detention Center.
"We are aware that there is an investigation under way; however, we are not permitted to comment on a pending investigation," Penrod said.
Lowe, when contacted by the Eagle-Gazette, had no comment.
