A three-time convicted killer was denied a bid today to be moved to a prison in Illinois so that he could be closer to his family. State Department of Corrections Commissioner Gary Lanigan rejected a request made by James Koedatich, now 62, to be transferred just one day after he received a letter from a victims’ rights advocate opposing the move. “In the interest of public safety and in support of your position, I have denied Koedatich’s request. He will remain in New Jersey State Prison to serve any time remaining on the Morris County terms,” Lanigan wrote in a one-page letter to Richard Pompelio, executive director of the Whippany-based New Jersey Crime Victims’ Law Center. Pompelio was thrilled by the prompt response to his opposition and the fact that the inmate whom he described as a man who “personifies a history of evil” would be spending the rest of his life behind bars in New Jersey.
