A slow thawing of America's recession hasn't eased the flow of needy into Sioux Falls' shelters on cold winter nights, agency officials say. Even as Wall Street and the U.S. economy begin to rebound, the St. Francis House still has a waiting list of 12 people and 40 families for its beds, director Julie Becker said. The Union Gospel Mission expanded part of its facilities last summer from 20 to 48 beds to serve an increasing number of women and children, executive director Fran Stenberg said. And for the second straight year, the Salvation Army has opened its gymnasium after the first of the year to serve as a warming site from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for those looking to get out of the freezing night.
