It looks like Essex County will be the home to a new federal detention center for illegal immigrants. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) federal agency in Washington D.C. made the decision. Spokesperson for ICE Harold Ort says the decision is still exploratory. "ICE has tentatively selected Essex County to be awarded an Intergovernmental Service Agreement (IGSA) for the operation and management of a 2,700 beds for immigration detainees," said Ort. County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo said the county submitted a pitch to ICE in the mid-spring to use parts of the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark and Delaney Hall, a residential facility that prepares criminal offenders for re-entry into society, for the new immigration detainees.
