Inmate Will Not Be Released To Die

A former West Milford martial arts instructor who pleaded guilty of bringing teenage girls across state lines for sex has just months to live and has failed in his bid for release.

"No matter what the sentence is now, he's going to be dying in jail anyway," his lawyer, Amy Attias, said Monday.

Attias asked the court to release Trent Young so "he wouldn't die in a prison," but U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas denied the request at a hearing last month and moved up Young's sentencing date to Jan. 25.

Young, a former New York City police officer from Middletown, N.Y., has stage 4 colon cancer and is being treated at a medical facility adjacent to the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla, N.Y., where he is being held, Attias said.
