Tax Increase May Pay For Prison

The Ouachita Correctional Center needs a 3.1-mill increase in property tax millage to be adequately funded for the next five years, according to a proposal by Ouachita Parish Police Juror Charles Jackson.

At Monday's regular Police Jury meeting, Jackson presented a proposal to the Police Jury to ask parish voters for a 12.30-mill property tax to fund OCC. Currently, the facility is operated with an 8.6-mill property tax which expires in December. Also, a 0.6-mill tax to fund capital projects at OCC is also being assessed.

"The bottom line is the math doesn't work," Jackson told police jurors. "Our expenses are going up faster than the revenues. On an annual basis, expenses have grown 6.37 percent "ยป revenue is growing about 2.4 percent."
