CRESCENT CITY, Calif.—A maximum-security prison on California's north coast has been locked-down until further notice while authorities investigate an attack on three prison guards who were rushed with handmade weapons.

State prison officials said the three guards, ages 37, 43 and 45, were released from a local hospital after being treated for cuts and puncture wounds they suffered during Tuesday morning's assault.

One is a 20-year-old man serving a 50-year sentence for first-degree murder. The other is a 36-year-old man serving 60 years for carjacking and making terrorist threats.
