Prison Officers Rally Over State Reductions
By Ohio News Network
Published: 09/30/2003

Off-duty officers at the two state prisons in Mansfield, Ohio are holding a protest demonstration this morning over what they say have been reductions in their ranks by the governor's administration.

They're marching outside the prison gates and chanting "No More Lucasville" in reference to the state penitentiary riot a decade ago.

A spokesman for the correctional officers' union says they're concerned about dangerous working conditions with fewer officers per inmates. Nick Bradshaw says there's one officer for every 169 prisoners at the Mansfield Correctional Institution, where death row is housed.

Bradshaw's counterpart at the Richland Correctional Institution, Bob White, echoed his concerns about working conditions.
