A 63-year-old Oxford man escaped serious injury during an early morning fire at his Izard County mobile home, according to Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence.

Firefighters from Oxford and Franklin arrived at Loy Carlson's Pleasant Ridge Road home at about 2 a.m. to find the mobile home and a car fully engulfed in flames, Lawrence said.

"We were told there was an occupant still in the home," Lawrence said.

Chief investigator Charlie Melton and chief deputy Earnie Blackley searched the wreckage once the fire was out and could not find Carlson, Lawrence said.

Once emergency personnel could not locate Carlson or his body, a dog team from the Department of Corrections and the helicopter from the Baxter County Sheriff's Office were called in to assist with the search for Carlson, said Lawrence, who noted family members told authorities Carlson has "mental issues."
