| Exesive Force Costly For Jail Officers |

A federal jury in Beaumont has awarded a man a total of more than $16 million dollars for injuries caused by two former correctional officers. However, the money will not be paid from tax dollars because Jefferson County was not a defendant in the case. The civil jury in U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone's courtroom found former Jefferson County jailers Johnny Lynn Vickery Jr. and Rodney Cole used excessive force while booking Joseph Christopher Roberts into jail in April of 2007. Both officers resigned after being convicted of official oppression in 2008. This week the federal jury in the civil case saw jail video of the beating. Former inmate awarded millions in jail beating. Christopher Roberts testified he had been stopped for making an illegal U-turn and was arrested because he had other unpaid tickets. The video shows former officer Rodney Cole punching Roberts. Cole represented himself in the case and didn't testify so no reason was given as to what caused him to punch Roberts 3 times.
