It would be such a small change for such a big trade-off. Prison inmates who put out the effort to further their education through working on or obtaining a GED or earning a CareerTech certification receive good-time credits. This doesn't amount to a lot of time off their sentences - just one day of incarceration per credit. But up until recently those credits weren't extended to inmates completing an associate or bachelor's degree - a glaring omission. That would change under a bill proposed by state Sen. John Ford, R-Bartlesville. The law would allow DOC to award 100 credits for those obtaining an associate degree and 200 credits for a bachelor's degree. Ford's bill does not affect many inmates. Out of nearly 26,000 inmates, only 29 inmates in fiscal 2010 completed their associate degrees and only one completed a bachelor's degree. Those 30 inmates, however, already are a leg up on most other inmates. More education, as Ford noted, "greatly enhances their ability to find a job. If they have a degree or an industry certification from CareerTech, their chance of getting a job and not going back to prison is enhanced." Read More. |
