The city Bremerton faces stiff competition to host a new Department of Corrections’ reception facility within the South Kitsap Industrial Area. Eleven governments, from the state’s Department of Natural Resources to the small city of Castle Rock in southwest Washington, have entered the competition to play host to the $167 million center, built to hold incoming prison inmates for about a month while corrections officials decide which state prison to send them to for the duration of their sentence. Requests for the reception center were due to the Department of Corrections on Jan. 6. Aside from Bremerton, the cities of Castle Rock, McCleary, Morton, Raymond and Winlock in southwest Washington; the counties of Lewis, Thurston, Grays Harbor and Mason; and a site near Arlington owned by the state’s Department of Natural Resources have all thrown their hats into the ring.
