Trooper accused of lying to gain access to inmate resigns

A Tennessee Highway Patrol officer resigned last week after being accused of lying to gain access to a Sumner County inmate with whom he had a personal problem.
Albert B. Ford, 39, visited the county jail in Gallatin on July 6 while he was off duty and falsely told officials he was investigating a drug case and a bad-check ring to get access to the inmate, said Beth Denton, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
''These (statements) were untrue,'' Denton said. ''He was not there conducting any type of investigation.''
Denton said she did not know either the name of the inmate or details of the alleged personal problem between Ford and the inmate. Denton said, however, that the incident involved a female associate, whom Ford and the inmate both know.
Authorities were not aware of any fight between the trooper and the inmate, Denton said.
In proceedings last Tuesday, Ford was recommended for termination because of gross misconduct, failure to maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public and fellow employees, and filing a false report, Denton said.
Ford, who covered Sumner County, filled out his resignation without comment, Denton said.
When Ford said he was investigating a case, jail officials had no reason to doubt him, said Bob Barker, chief deputy for the Sumner County Sheriff's Department.
Ford could not be reached for comment yesterday.
As a trooper, Ford had five prior disciplinary actions taken against him, resulting in a total of 23 days without pay, Denton said. He had been a trooper since January 2002. He had worked for the Department of Safety as a policeman at the state Capitol since 1997 and worked at the Department of Correction for seven years before that, Denton said.
