MT. VERNON — A city man who was found guilty in November of aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm has been sentenced to a total of 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on those and drug related charges. Marlin Edwards, 22, of the 500 block of North fifth Street, was found guilty after a jury deliberated less than two hours of shooting Tylone Edwards in the right groin area on Aug. 7, 2010. Edwards was shot while he was walking in the 1900 and 2000 blocks of Conger, the same area in which 15-year-old Deon Feggins was shot to death a day later. Edwards was taken into custody on Aug. 9 after police sighted him fleeing into a home while they were patrolling the area in the wake of threats and violence following the two shootings. According to information from Mt. Vernon Police Chief Chris Mendenall, police were given permission to enter the home and took Edwards into custody, as well as Tony L. Feggins, 17 — the brother of Deon Feggins — after a handgun was found in Feggins’ room. Read More. |
