Inmate Deaths Raise Questions In Austrialian Prison

THE union representing prison officers says six inmates have died in the privately run Parklea prison in the past 6½ months - as many as in the entire prison system in the past financial year.

But the Department of Corrective Services disputes this and says only three people have died at Parklea since it was privatised 14 months ago.

One was Czaba ''Chubby'' Magyari, who was on remand on drugs charges and was found dead in his cell in July.

Advertisement: Story continues below In December Walter Ciaran Marsh, the alleged killer of a Sydney nurse, Michelle Beets, attempted suicide at the prison, but has since recovered.

The dispute over the number of inmates who had died at the prison came as the Public Service Association called for a full review of the Parklea prison after three inmates - Raymond Vance Fletcher, 25, Dion Dugal, 19, and Ronny Vinaisi, 30 - escaped on Tuesday night from its minimum security wing.
