The state has hired a doctor to review the quality of health care in Ohio's prisons. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction announced Monday it has hired Dr. Steven S. Spencer, an independent consultant in correctional health care. Spencer, who is based in New Mexico, will launch a review of the department's policies and procedures in delivering health care to Ohio's inmates. Last month, an investigation by The Columbus Dispatch and ONN affiliate WBNS-TV revealed wrongful deaths, inadequate care and questionable doctors in the prison health system. Ohio's governor has called for an investigation, as well as a panel to review the system. A report alleged Ohio inmates face long waits for treatment by doctors who often are overworked and sometimes have a history of state disciplinary problems. Additionally, some inmates have waited months for operations and others have gone days without receiving prescription medicine. "We are working hard to ensure quality health services in our prisons," DRC Director Reginald Wilkinson says. Spencer's first on-site visit will be on October 15. The state's review team is expected to submit its report by the end of the year. According to the department, there are more than 44,700 inmates in Ohio's prisons. The annual cost per inmate is $21,872. |
