Juvenile criminals released from state institutions will now be supervised by counties instead of the state, but Riverside County is ready for the increased caseload, its chief probation officer said. “It’s just a shifting responsibility, and you’re not looking at big numbers,” said Alan Crogan, who heads the county’s probation department. The department will oversee parole for 22 young offenders currently in state facilities when they’re released. The young offenders — now serving time for crimes like armed robbery, sex offenses and homicide — have needs similar to those of adults the county’s probation department is already supervising, Crogan said.
