| KY Prison Numbers Down All Around |

Bad news about crime always makes it to the front page and the top of the six o’clock news. As they say in the trade, “If it bleeds, it leads.” But, occasionally, we are presented with the opportunity to give our readers some good news about crime in the Bluegrass State. Today is one of those days. The Kentucky Department of Corrections released numbers on Thursday that were good news, and welcomed by state officials. The state’s two and three-year recidivism rates are at the lowest mark in several years. The state prison population is also currently less than when we began 2010, and not just by a few inmates: 1,097 to be exact. The 24-month recidivism rate is now at a 10-year low: 29.5 percent. The last time the rates were comparable was in 2001 and 2000, when the rate was 30 and 28.8 percent respectively. The Kentucky DOC’s three-year recidivism rate is at the lowest mark in nine years, since the 2002 releases that were reported in 2005. The three-year recidivism rate is 40.3% for the 2007 releases.
