Practically every governmental entity in the United States is looking for ways to thin the soup to make ends meet as state and federal deficits continue to spiral out of sight. A recent article on how the city of Rushford would be saving $80,000 in the cost of building a new community center by using county jail laborers caught my eye. According to the article, Sentence To Serve (STS) crews are digging trenches for utility lines and will be helping install insulation and hanging sheetrock. The STS program uses county and state prisoners who have good conduct records and are deemed by the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department to be a low risk of attempting to escape. The STS crews are not shackled or handcuffed. They are supervised by an unarmed Department of Corrections officer. Read More. |
