OKLAHOMA CITY - House Speaker Kris Steele said he plans to push for legislation aimed at reducing the state's incarceration costs. Steele, R-Shawnee, recently led a delegation of lawmakers to Texas to review efforts that the state has made to reduce corrections costs. "Texas is being hailed as the state to look for in corrections reform," Steele said. "They have been at it for several years and are starting to see very positive, tangible results." Texas has targeted the nonviolent, low-risk offender population and invested in community treatment programs for things such as addiction and substance abuse, he said. "They have also been able to reinvest those dollars saved from having fewer incarcerated into prevention and education," Steele said. "It is causing their crime rate to decrease." Read More. |
