| State Working To Reduce Prison Numbers |

A national research panel is looking at Louisiana's high incarceration rate to find ways to reduce the number of people in prison and make efficient use of the money the state spends on prisons. But it can't just be releasing inmates, corrections officials say. Inmates currently in jail need preparation and job training to be able to exist outside prison without committing crimes. "Policymakers across the country are recognizing that prisons, just like any government spending program, need to be put to the cost-benefit test to make sure taxpayers are getting the best possible public safety return on their dollars," said Adam Gelb, director of the Public Safety Performance Project of the Pew Center of the States, which will study the state's prison policies.
