Prison Expansion Plan On Hold For Now

SWANNANOA — A Swannanoa youth development center scheduled to close in March likely will sit vacant for at least a year.

Officials announced this week they will cut costs by shutting down Swannanoa Valley Youth Development Center and Woodson Wilderness Challenge program.

The Buncombe County facility already had been targeted for closure at the end of the year to make additional room for a women's prison also housed on the property.

But a looming state budget crisis means the Department of Corrections won't be able to move into the additional space until the start of fiscal year 2012-13 at the earliest, agency spokeswoman Pam Walker said. The department owns the property.

The original plan was to increase the prison population to 450 women from its current 270 inmates and renovate several buildings for classrooms, and medical and dental care for the increased population.
