| Multiple Changes In Iowa Parole Board |

Gov. Terry Branstad has dismissed three members of the Iowa Board of Parole who were appointed by his predecessor, Democratic Gov. Chet Culver, and he replaced them today with his own appointees The three former board members – all terminated last week – were Larry James and Steve Young, both of Des Moines, and Barbara Western of Waterloo. All were interim appointments by Culver and had not been confirmed by the Iowa Senate. Branstad replaced them today with former Rep. Doris Kelley of Waterloo, retired Pioneer executive W. Thomas Phillips of Waukee, and Jim Felker of Hiawatha, a former Iowa Department of Corrections employee. The three dismissals last week had left the five-member parole panel without the three-member quorum it needed to grant paroles and work-releases. On a monthly basis, the board normally grants more than 200 paroles and about 75 work-releases. Branstad, a Republican, told reporters at a Statehouse news conference this morning he didn’t believe the five-member board has been moving quickly enough to review parole cases. Read More. |
