The man leading a project to free innocent prisoners in Alaska said nearly half the requests for help have come from Alaska Natives. Natives represent an outsized portion of the state's roughly 5,000 prisoners, about 35 percent, said Bill Oberly, executive director of the Alaska Innocence Project. Natives were 16.5 percent of the overall Alaska population during the U.S. Census in 2000. About 45 percent of the requests Oberly has received have come from Alaska Native prisoners who say they were wrongfully convicted. He thinks that number may grow as more prisoners learn about the effort. Information about the project has spread largely through word-of-mouth and fliers the Department of Corrections posted in prison libraries in Alaska and in Colorado, said Oberly.
