For the first time since Nebraska lawmakers approved lethal injection, the state is looking to set a date for an inmate's execution. In a motion filed Monday, Attorney General Jon Bruning asked the Nebraska Supreme Court to schedule the execution of death row inmate Carey Dean Moore, convicted in 1979 for the murders of two Omaha taxi drivers. Moore's execution has been on hold since May 2, 2007, when the Supreme Court issued a stay as it considered another death row inmate's challenge of the electric chair. The court has since ruled electrocution unconstitutional. Gov. Dave Heineman signed a bill in 2009 approving lethal injection as the state's new method of execution. He signed off on the protocol for lethal injection in February 2010, and the Department of Corrections announced Friday that it had received a shipment of the drugs needed to carry out executions.
