The request for a special use permit by Mesa landowners was tabled Monday night by the Coolidge City Council, which was uncomfortable with a lack of information. The proposal was brought before council by Coolidge Growth Management Director Alton Bruce on behalf of the City of Mesa, which offered up more than 600 acres to be used as an alternate site for a proposed minimum/medium private correctional facility. “We want to help strengthen Coolidge’s package,” said Natalie Lewis, Mesa representative. “We’re just here to offer another option.” The parcel of land is located between Storey and Steele Roads and would be contingent upon the primary location at Randolph and Vail Roads. Both sites are located within city limits. The property would be beneficial to Coolidge’s proposal to the Arizona Department of Corrections, which has yet to release another request for proposals.
