| NC Juvenile Center To Close In March |

The Swannanoa Valley Youth Development Center will close March 1, the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention said last week. The center employs 84 people and houses 48 juveniles. “We knew it was going to happen, we just didn’t know when,” Carlos Showers, a social worker at the center and a Town of Black Mountain alderman, said. “It’s kind of sad to see it end this way, but we understand. Nobody’s going out of here with their heads down.” The announcement marks a turnaround from statements in 2010 suggesting the center would operate for two or three more years, but budget cuts hastened the decision, William Lassiter, spokesperson for the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, said. The department was told in December to cut 2.5 percent from its budget for the remainder of the year, he said. Read More. |
