GRITNEY -- A massive manhunt was under way Thursday for a 35-year-old man whose parents were found slain in their Cottondale home a day earlier. Officials with several law enforcement agencies — including four sheriff’s offices, several police departments and state investigators — swarmed the rural roads near the junction of Holmes, Washington and Jackson counties, searching for Wade Williams after his parents, Sharon and Bruce Williams, were found dead in their home at 5213 First St. in Cottondale. About 9 a.m. Thursday, authorities found a Ford F-150 belonging to the slain couple burned and abandoned about two miles into the woods off a dirt road at the Choctawhatchee River Wildlife Management Area in the Gritney community of Holmes County, Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts said. A clerk at a local convenience store told officers she “feels confident” the driver of the truck was Wade Williams. Crime scene investigators were processing the truck Thursday to find any usable evidence, but Roberts said it was his understanding the vehicle was destroyed. It is not known yet if the truck was set on fire intentionally or as a result of getting stuck in the swampy forest and overheating, he said. Investigators also did not know when the vehicle burned. Officials reported having a “person of interest” in the case Wednesday, and Cottondale Police Chief William Watford emphasized they were looking for Wade Williams, but would not specifically call him a suspect in the case.
