TOWN OF ULSTER — A corrections officer died and two others were injured as a result of a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon.

A state Department of Corrections van driven by Casamiro Pomales, 52, was involved in a crash at 1:35 p.m. about two miles north of the I-87 Kingston exit.

Pomales, who has worked at Eastern Correctional Facility in Napanoch since 1989, died, while corrections officer John Minuck and prisoner Ralph Ambert suffered non life-threatening injuries, said spokeswoman Linda Foglia. Minuck and Ambert were taken to Kingston Hospital.

The van was taking Ambert to the Albany area for a medical issue. Ambert, 40, is serving a life sentence for a 1995 murder conviction.

Pomales, a Napanoch resident, is survived by his wife and several grown children. Read More.
