Perry County Jail sued for overcrowding |

The Indiana Civil Liberties Union is suing Perry County over jail overcrowding following an inmate's death. The lawsuit says overcrowding and understaffing at the southern Indiana jail creates dangerous conditions for inmates, including frequent violence. The federal lawsuit says the jail sometimes has only one officer on duty. It also says inmates don't receive adequate medical care. The lawsuit follows the death last week of a 33-year-old inmate from Tell City. Jail staff found Danny Osborne lying on the floor of his cell, and he was pronounced dead at Perry County Memorial Hospital. The cause of death has not been determined. ICLU attorney Ken Falk says the lockup is one of Indiana's oldest operating jails and doesn't meet modern standards. |
