Former Erin physician Robert D. Mayfield served a bit more than two years in a Mississippi prison for conspiracy stemming from a foiled murder-for-hire plot.

Mayfield was given a six-year sentence in March 2008 as part of a plea bargain between his attorney and state prosecutors.

According to the Crossville Chronicle, Mayfield pled guilty in a Sardis, Miss., court and received a 15-year sentence with nine years suspended and six years to serve at 85 percent.

He was released from Southern Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville in May 2010, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, and must report monthly to a parole officer until June.

Mayfield was a surgeon at Trinity Hospital, now Patients' Choice Medical Center, about a decade ago. He later practiced in Crossville and served as a Cumberland County commissioner there.
