South Carolina Corrections Department officials say two inmates serving time on burglary convictions escaped from Evans Correctional Institution on Sunday after being shot at by an officer. The department says 26-year-old Robert Fortener Diehl and 25-year-old Jonathan Melton apparently had help breaking out of the maximum-security facility in Marlboro County early Sunday morning. Searchers found the outside fence cut, said Charlie Sheppard, the department's inspector general. It is not the first time Diehl has been on the run in and around Horry County. He was arrested last August after he led Horry County police officers on a chase that ended near Galivants Ferry. Diehl fled from officers who knew he was wanted for outstanding warrants. Diehl also escaped from the Goodman Correctional Institute in Aiken County in 1997. He and another inmate pushed open a window, knocked out a screen and walked away from the jail. Diehl was serving an eight-year sentence at the minimum-security prison. Melton was serving 18 years for burglary, grand larceny and conspiracy in Horry and Richland counties. Diehl was serving 15 years for charges including burglary, forgery and possession of a stolen vehicle. All of his sentences are from Horry County. |
