| Town Not Happy Over Potential Halfway House |

Jan 31, 2011 (The Patriot-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A King of Prussia-based development firm wants to open a 221-bed halfway house in Harrisburg for female offenders newly released from prison. The plan from Philadelphia Suburban Development Corp. would place the center in the Hudson Building, a two-story landmark at Sixth and Maclay streets that has been empty and deteriorating for several years. Mark Nicoletti, Philadelphia Suburban vice president, said last week there is no contract for inmates at this point. But Liberty Management Services, the proposed operator, would begin working to lease available bed space to the federal and state governments if the use is approved by the city. "We think that given the absence of proven programming for women in that part of the state, that there might be a need that this program could address," Nicoletti said. The state Department of Corrections operates halfway houses for women in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, but it does not have a female-only facility in its Central Region. Read More. |
