WESTERLY - When Police Chief Edward A. Mello was asked to help start a group of local agencies to ease the transition of prison inmates back into society, he didn't hesitate.

"The chief and I met several times, and he really kind of jumped right on board," said Teresa E. Smith, of Westerly, a probation and parole supervisor for the Rhode Island Department of Corrections.

On Friday, Mello will receive a Friends of the Corrections Department Award for his work on the Westerly Re-entry Council, an initiative that he and Smith ended up spearheading since it started about 18 months ago.

Smith said that Mello offered a conference room in the Westerly Police Headquarters for the council's monthly meeting. The chief has also arranged for parole and probation officers to join his officers for ride-a-longs and visits to those on parole and probation. Smith also praised Mello for his role with the intensive planning required to get the council started.
