Officials in Hilo, Hawaii say an inmate was treated for smoke inhalation Saturday after prisoners started two fires in the Hawaii Community Correctional Center. The inmate was returned to the jail after being treated at Hilo Medical Center. Fire officials say the fires that were set in separate buildings burned bedding, clothing, plastic chairs, trash cans and a table. They say the inmates had evacuated to outdoor recreation areas by the time firefighters arrived on the scene. After dousing the fires, fans were used to clear the buildings of smoke. The officials estimated damage at $2,000. Police Lt. Ron Paul says both fires were contained to common areas. Police opened two criminal property damage investigations. Police say all of the some 300 prisoners in the jail have been accounted for. A third building housing female inmates wasn't involved. |
